The Maryland town of Berlin, with a population of 4,500, is located in Worcester County and is the home of Ocean Downs racecourse. The town of Berlin began to emerge as early as 1790, part of a 300 acre plantation, and increased in size in 1868, expanding still further when holidaymakers called in on their way to the coastal resort of Ocean City, 6 miles from Ocean Downs racecourse. The Ocean Downs 4 furlong oval harness racecourse, with 135 metre home straight, held its inaugural meeting on 1st August 1948. It holds regular meetings during the summer months, with large crowds able to access the 4650 seater grandstand and separate 350 seater Clubhouse. There was a period in its history, from 1985 to the mid-1990s, when it was renamed Delmarva Downs, but in 1996 it reverted to Ocean Downs. Its principal race is the Hal Belote Memorial.
